'True Blood' teases big death at Comic-Con

TV

Is Sookie becoming a fairy-vampire? Is Billith a dead man?

There was plenty for fans of HBO's "True Blood" to sink their fangs into when the show presented its San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday. New showrunner Brian Buckner ? who replaced creator Alan Ball this season ? gave Truebies plenty to think about with a jam-packed new trailer for the remaining half of the season.

The video kicked off with a funeral scene, hinting yet again at the major character death that many of the cast members and Buckner himself teased before season six even premiered. In addition to the passing, it also looks like Warlow gets a taste of Sookie, Bill defies Lilith, Sam and Alcide face off, and more.

"I feel like this show is ultimately about the relationship between vampires and humans and it's about this town. I want to bring it in a little bit. I feel like at times we've hurt ourselves," Buckner said of upcoming episodes. "My goal is to get all these people living under the umbrella of one story and one threat ... and make it about this small town we've all come to know and love."

?You're going to feel that the show is going to return back to its roots and be about this gang of people living in Bon Temps," he added. "We're going to try to condense the number of stories we're telling and really make this feel like we're going home."

Star Anna Paquin, who plays Sookie Stackhouse, is happy that her character is much more fearless this season.

"She's not being anyone's doormat. She's sick of taking whatever from whomever," Paquin said. "She's more independent, strong and tough. I feel like she's actually finally learning from all the incredibly odd, bizarre and unfortunate stuff that's happened to her."

Other highlights from the panel:

  • When asked what it was like to be married to co-star Stephen Moyer, whose character this year seems to think he's a god, Paquin quipped: ?I?m agnostic, so I haven?t decided if I?m going to accept his godliness.?
  • Joe Manganiello addressed the enormous fan criticism as to how his character, werewolf Alcide, has evolved into a not as nice a guy this season: ?I don?t like that everybody?s upset at my character,? he admitted. ?Being pack master is a pretty thankless job."
  • Sam Trammell lamented that his character, Sam Merlotte, seems to have nothing but bad luck when it comes to romance. ?My girlfriends keep getting killed!?
  • About that vampire-blood-induced dream Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) had about Warlow, Rob Kazinsky, the man behind the fairy-vamp, said: ?Ryan made me feel like a lady that day. He couldn?t have been more gentle. Not too much tongue. Just the right amount. A little peekaboo.?
  • And how does fan favorite Nelsan Ellis get into character as Lafayette? ?A little Rihanna and makeup gets me to LaLaLand!? he revealed.

"True Blood" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Trayvon Martin, Racial Profiling, Groupthink and Team Dynamics ...

Posted on by Anne Thornley-Brown, M.B.A. @executiveoasis

This business blog focuses on team building and issues directly related to team and corporate effectiveness. For this reason, I rarely explore my personal views on events in the public arena on this blog. As a rule I tend to keep my personal views private and only make my professional opinions ?public.

Every now and then, an issue arises that is so compelling that I feel it is important for me to weigh in. I am not an American and I don?t live in the USA. Notwithstanding, the circumstances surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin and the verdict?in the George Zimmerman case that was delivered one week ago today make it impossible to remain silent about what I perceive as a serious miscarriage of justice.

I have been working on this blog ?post since the verdict was delivered. I have timed the release of this blog post for when the verdict was delivered a week ago. I will keep it brief and link it to team effectiveness.

Why the Trayvon Martin Case Haunts me

I have followed the Trayvon Martin case since the news about the shooting of this unarmed 17 year old first broke. Now that the verdict has been delivered, what many feared has taken place. ?George Zimmerman has been declared ?not guilty?. There are several disturbing aspects to the death of Trayvon Martin and the verdict.

As a mother, this case haunts me. It?s not surprising that teenagers of every generation tend to dress like their peers. As parents we can discourage this, nag and point out all the reasons why this is not a wise choice. I confess that, long before the death of Trayvon Martin, I?ve even hidden my son?s Black hoodie that was given to him as a gift.

Ultimately, young people get to the stage when they must make their own decisions and share choose their own clothing. Also, ?you can?t keep them locked up or give them curfews and ground them for violating them forever. They go away to university. They get jobs away from home and, at some point, they must make their own choices.

When I saw the video footage of Trayvon Martin from the 7-11 cameras, my heart skipped a beat. You see until Trayvon turned and faced the camera, that could have been my son. Similar build, similar clothing.?Many teenagers Black, White and Asian dress the same way.?If my son had walked down that street, George Zimmerman would have known nothing about him but there is no doubt in my mind that he would have profiled him too.

Racial Profiling

George Zimmerman knew nothing about Trayvon Martin yet he judged him as being ?up to know good? based on what? Let?s not sidestep the issue. All George Zimmerman had to go on was what Trayvon Martin was wearing and his race.

Profiling also kicked in when the jury determined if Rachel Jeantel was a credible witness. She was black and overweight and they had difficulty understanding her as she has an underbite that interferes with her speech. ?So, she was deemed to be not credible. By contrast, the white jurors who spoke standard English were perceived to be credible. Whether you like him or dislike him, Geraldo Rivera called this one accurately.

?

?

How are these dynamics played out in the corporate world? Prospective job candidates and, once they are hired, ?team members are often judged based on superficialities. When I?ve facilitated behaviour based interviewing workshops in 6 countries, I?ve cautioned executives and hiring managers that the slick candidate in perfect corporate attire, might just be a con artist. I?ve also pointed out that the a Black candidate who is confident is often judged as ?arrogant? and a woman who is appropriately assertive is often labeled aggressive. For example, when the word ?too? is placed in front of a positive adjective to describe a member of a visible minority group (e.g. over confidence, too polished), it?s a sure sign that profiling is going on.

Here is another example. Companies brought in ?dress down? and casual Fridays a couple of decades ago and provided few dress code guidelines. They then started to judge anyone who didn?t conform to an unwritten standard and wear golf shirts and Dockers.

It?s important to move beyond the superficial, dig deeper and evaluate individuals more objectively. In the corporate world, profiling can cost people their livelihood or a promotion. It?s a slow death. On February 26, 2012, it cost Trayvon Martin his life.

Character Assassination

Another aspect of the Trayvon Martin case that is highly disturbing is the attempt to assassinate his character. It is totally disgusting to see attempts to say that Trayvon Martin deserved what he got. If you think I am exaggerating, a simple Google search will turn up blogs calling Trayvon a punk and a thug and referring to his parents as ?bad parents?. (I will not link to them and promote them.)

?

?

I have never met a teenager who is perfect. Most teenagers make mistakes. That is why they need parents to guided them and try to show them the right way. Many teenagers test limits and show poor judgement. Some engage in risk taking behaviour that horrifies parents. Canadian broadcaster and scientist David Suzuki explore the reasons for this in Surviving :) The Teenage Brain.

?

?

As the adolescent brain?s pre-frontal cortex is developing, gradually learn to consider the consequences of their actions and display sound judgement. For this reason, I did not give my son permission to participate in social media as a teenager. When I discovered he had opened an account at school, I urged him to exercise great care about what he posted. I advised him to be careful and pointed out that anything he posted could come back to haunt him.

To imply or in some cases state that Trayvon Martin?s youthful lapses in judgement and mistakes mean that Zimmerman was justified in killing an unarmed teenager is despicable. People posing this argument should be ashamed of themselves. It is telling that they don?t bring up George Zimmerman?s history of violence. In fact, until there was public outcry, the police didn?t even investigate George Zimmerman?s criminal record but they did try to see if they could dig one up for Trayvon, a juvenile. They couldn?t.

Similar dynamics are at play in the corporate world. If someone is passed over for promotion and they suspect it is due to their race and ethnicity, rarely is there an attempt to conduct an impartial investigation to uncover the truth objectively. Instead, the character assassination begins. Every effort is made to justify the decision by tarnishing someone?s reputation even if the individual has had glowing performance reviews and no concerns about his or her performance have ever been documented.

Groupthink

Finally, based on the interview with Juror B-37, it appears that groupthink may have been at play in the jury that was initially split. Here is the Juror B-37 ?interview transcript. She even spoke of other jurors putting pressure on a juror who really wanted to leave. 5 jurors voted and the 6th one finally caved into group pressure resulting in a verdict of ?not guilty? instead of a hung jury. When Groupthink kicks in, the wrong decisions are made on juries and in the corporate world?.sometimes with serious consequences.

The Aftermath

In summary, racial profiling can mean that the best candidate is discounted and the wrong candidate joins the team. Character assassination is used to cover up and justify decisions instead of evaluating them objectively and groupthink ensures that many teams continue to make poor decisions. Together, the same dynamics that played out in the Trayvon Martin case are alive and well in the corporate world and they undermine corporate effectiveness daily.

Introducing myProject Nollywood; Re-inventing Nollywood and ...

...

?

Last weekend, I had the chance to put on the Spotlight, Victor Akeze, Founder of http://www.myprojectnollyowood.com we both agreed on one thing, it?s time to showcase (Africa especially Nigerian entertainment industry)and bring it to a level where they can compete with the other two bigger industries like Hollywood and Bollywood.

Together with his Co-Founder Matthias Okala, they have built a unique platform to fund and collaborate on everything entertainment for Africans all over the world.

myProject Nollywood is truly a unique undertaking from someone whose taste and passion for movies, and most especially, a good story is undoubtedly the sole reason he started this project and to allow people like me and you, fund projects we want to see hit the big and small screens. ?Don?t be fooled, this project isn?t just about movies, it about entertainment in general which includes supporting music, theatre art, stand-up comedy and you name it.

In a nutshell, myProject Nollywood is an idea and talent incubator that provides support to passionate, up and coming entertainers. The platform invites cinematic, stage production and other scripted entertainment ideas. Through crowd funding and crowd sourcing myProject Nollywood takes your idea from inception to production.

Unlike other crowdfunding or crowdsourcing websites, myProject Nollywood has decided to cut themselves a particular niche by concentrating on everything entertainment.

On myProject Nollywood, aspiring or?credited?actors, actresses, musicians, directors, producers, sound editors, make-up artists etc or anyone who?s got a beautiful location to share for video shoots, concerts, stand-up entertainment can use my platform as their ideal Launchpad to kick start their dream project and share it will the world for funding or collaboration.

Their business model has been kept very simple; post your project ? written or/and video for funding, reward those who have shown support. Or source the right talent needed for project collaboration?all within their platform?and together as a team, pitch your project for funding as well as connect to production partners?Production Houses, Producers, Directors and Distributors.

The key take away from what this new company is trying to do is not necessarily re-inventing the wheel, but instead, felt that time has come for a change. They are using their platform with the power of the crowd to re-invent an industry that is lacking quality and enough bite to say, yes, we are the third biggest industry in the world.

myProject Nollywood will be working closely with top performing arts colleges, universities, international film organisations to achieve its goal.

5 things to know about Tour de France

SAINT-MALO, France (AP) ? Five things to know as the Tour de France enters its 11th stage on Wednesday:

___

1. BRITTANY BEAUTY ? If any region can be considered the heart of French cycling, it's Brittany. Home to five-time Tour winner Bernard Hinault and three-time champion Louison Bobet, France's verdant and rocky western shoulder is also known for its oysters, crepes, maritime and Celtic past, and regional pride: roadway signs are in both French and the local Breton language, as part of efforts to resuscitate its historic identity. On Tuesday, Brittany's black-and-white flags ? with a striped motif that's somewhat reminiscent of the American flag ? flew in large numbers on roadsides as Tour riders cut a 197-kilometer (122.4-mile) south-to-north, swathe through Brittany for Stage 10, won by Germany's Marcel Kittel at the walled city of Saint-Malo.

___

2. BUS CRUSH ? The crush of autograph-seeking fans, harried team staffers in cars, busy journalists and weary, adrenaline-charged riders can make for chaos after a Tour stage. One such episode broke out Tuesday at the Omega Pharma Quickstep bus ? where journalists sought comment from Mark Cavendish after he bumped into Argos Shimano's Tom Veelers, causing the Dutch rider to crash, in the final sprint. One TV journalist pleaded with a team vehicle driver who had rolled on his foot to back up. The Briton lost his temper after hearing a question he didn't like by grabbing an Associated Press reporter's recorder, and briefly placing it in the bus ? before it was returned. Anger flares sometimes between riders themselves: After a stage in the 2010 Tour, Spain's Carlos Barredo brawled with Rui Costa after the finish ? even trying to whack the Portuguese rider with a bike wheel.

___

3. BRAND NEW BIKE BITS ? When you ride as fast as Cavendish does, it's important to be able to slow down, too. He's been experimenting with cutting-edge hydraulic brakes at this Tour ? and his team says they have already proved themselves. He's been using the hydraulic brakes, instead of the old-fashioned cable-activated ones, on and off since the first stage. The brakes "saved him from crashing," said Rolf Aldag, a director on Cavendish's Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, in the pileup which marred the end of that stage. Speaking before Tuesday's stage, Aldag said Cavendish was able to avoid the Stage 1 chaos, when "everybody else around him crashes." He said the brakes are especially effective in wet conditions, and the team intends to equip its other riders with the brakes, too. But Cavendish hasn't used the brakes every day at the Tour ? and wasn't using them Tuesday.

___

4. HISTORY GALORE ? Tour riders will get a varied dose of history ? if they have time for it ? for the Stage 11 time trial on Wednesday. The ride starts in Avranches, whose website dates the town's origins back to Celts in the 9th century B.C. More recently, the town was liberated by forces of U.S. Gen. George S. Patton in World War II. Then, it's a 33-kilometer (20.5-mile) ride over to the breathtaking island citadel of Mont-Saint-Michel, listed as a World Heritage site by the United Nations' cultural agency, which calls it a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey erected between the 11th and 16th centuries.

___

5. TICK, TOCK ? Chris Froome will be focusing on the present, not the past, for Wednesday's race-against-the-clock: The Briton has worn the Tour leader's yellow jersey since capturing it Saturday in the first of two stages in the Pyrenees mountains. The 182 riders ? wearing space-age, aerodynamic helmets and atop special bikes ? will roll down the starter's ramp one by one in a race-against-the-clock, in reverse order of the standings. That means he will go last. Froome, who won bronze in the Olympic time trial last year, is seen as one of the favorites to win the stage ? along with Tony Martin of Germany, who won silver. Froome said: "I'm really looking forward to tomorrow ... Time trialing is one of those things that the more you do it, the better you become at it."
