'True Blood' teases big death at Comic-Con

TV

Is Sookie becoming a fairy-vampire? Is Billith a dead man?

There was plenty for fans of HBO's "True Blood" to sink their fangs into when the show presented its San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday. New showrunner Brian Buckner ? who replaced creator Alan Ball this season ? gave Truebies plenty to think about with a jam-packed new trailer for the remaining half of the season.

The video kicked off with a funeral scene, hinting yet again at the major character death that many of the cast members and Buckner himself teased before season six even premiered. In addition to the passing, it also looks like Warlow gets a taste of Sookie, Bill defies Lilith, Sam and Alcide face off, and more.

"I feel like this show is ultimately about the relationship between vampires and humans and it's about this town. I want to bring it in a little bit. I feel like at times we've hurt ourselves," Buckner said of upcoming episodes. "My goal is to get all these people living under the umbrella of one story and one threat ... and make it about this small town we've all come to know and love."

?You're going to feel that the show is going to return back to its roots and be about this gang of people living in Bon Temps," he added. "We're going to try to condense the number of stories we're telling and really make this feel like we're going home."

Star Anna Paquin, who plays Sookie Stackhouse, is happy that her character is much more fearless this season.

"She's not being anyone's doormat. She's sick of taking whatever from whomever," Paquin said. "She's more independent, strong and tough. I feel like she's actually finally learning from all the incredibly odd, bizarre and unfortunate stuff that's happened to her."

Other highlights from the panel:

  • When asked what it was like to be married to co-star Stephen Moyer, whose character this year seems to think he's a god, Paquin quipped: ?I?m agnostic, so I haven?t decided if I?m going to accept his godliness.?
  • Joe Manganiello addressed the enormous fan criticism as to how his character, werewolf Alcide, has evolved into a not as nice a guy this season: ?I don?t like that everybody?s upset at my character,? he admitted. ?Being pack master is a pretty thankless job."
  • Sam Trammell lamented that his character, Sam Merlotte, seems to have nothing but bad luck when it comes to romance. ?My girlfriends keep getting killed!?
  • About that vampire-blood-induced dream Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) had about Warlow, Rob Kazinsky, the man behind the fairy-vamp, said: ?Ryan made me feel like a lady that day. He couldn?t have been more gentle. Not too much tongue. Just the right amount. A little peekaboo.?
  • And how does fan favorite Nelsan Ellis get into character as Lafayette? ?A little Rihanna and makeup gets me to LaLaLand!? he revealed.

"True Blood" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Trayvon Martin, Racial Profiling, Groupthink and Team Dynamics ...

Posted on by Anne Thornley-Brown, M.B.A. @executiveoasis

This business blog focuses on team building and issues directly related to team and corporate effectiveness. For this reason, I rarely explore my personal views on events in the public arena on this blog. As a rule I tend to keep my personal views private and only make my professional opinions ?public.

Every now and then, an issue arises that is so compelling that I feel it is important for me to weigh in. I am not an American and I don?t live in the USA. Notwithstanding, the circumstances surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin and the verdict?in the George Zimmerman case that was delivered one week ago today make it impossible to remain silent about what I perceive as a serious miscarriage of justice.

I have been working on this blog ?post since the verdict was delivered. I have timed the release of this blog post for when the verdict was delivered a week ago. I will keep it brief and link it to team effectiveness.

Why the Trayvon Martin Case Haunts me

I have followed the Trayvon Martin case since the news about the shooting of this unarmed 17 year old first broke. Now that the verdict has been delivered, what many feared has taken place. ?George Zimmerman has been declared ?not guilty?. There are several disturbing aspects to the death of Trayvon Martin and the verdict.

As a mother, this case haunts me. It?s not surprising that teenagers of every generation tend to dress like their peers. As parents we can discourage this, nag and point out all the reasons why this is not a wise choice. I confess that, long before the death of Trayvon Martin, I?ve even hidden my son?s Black hoodie that was given to him as a gift.

Ultimately, young people get to the stage when they must make their own decisions and share choose their own clothing. Also, ?you can?t keep them locked up or give them curfews and ground them for violating them forever. They go away to university. They get jobs away from home and, at some point, they must make their own choices.

When I saw the video footage of Trayvon Martin from the 7-11 cameras, my heart skipped a beat. You see until Trayvon turned and faced the camera, that could have been my son. Similar build, similar clothing.?Many teenagers Black, White and Asian dress the same way.?If my son had walked down that street, George Zimmerman would have known nothing about him but there is no doubt in my mind that he would have profiled him too.

Racial Profiling

George Zimmerman knew nothing about Trayvon Martin yet he judged him as being ?up to know good? based on what? Let?s not sidestep the issue. All George Zimmerman had to go on was what Trayvon Martin was wearing and his race.

Profiling also kicked in when the jury determined if Rachel Jeantel was a credible witness. She was black and overweight and they had difficulty understanding her as she has an underbite that interferes with her speech. ?So, she was deemed to be not credible. By contrast, the white jurors who spoke standard English were perceived to be credible. Whether you like him or dislike him, Geraldo Rivera called this one accurately.

?

?

How are these dynamics played out in the corporate world? Prospective job candidates and, once they are hired, ?team members are often judged based on superficialities. When I?ve facilitated behaviour based interviewing workshops in 6 countries, I?ve cautioned executives and hiring managers that the slick candidate in perfect corporate attire, might just be a con artist. I?ve also pointed out that the a Black candidate who is confident is often judged as ?arrogant? and a woman who is appropriately assertive is often labeled aggressive. For example, when the word ?too? is placed in front of a positive adjective to describe a member of a visible minority group (e.g. over confidence, too polished), it?s a sure sign that profiling is going on.

Here is another example. Companies brought in ?dress down? and casual Fridays a couple of decades ago and provided few dress code guidelines. They then started to judge anyone who didn?t conform to an unwritten standard and wear golf shirts and Dockers.

It?s important to move beyond the superficial, dig deeper and evaluate individuals more objectively. In the corporate world, profiling can cost people their livelihood or a promotion. It?s a slow death. On February 26, 2012, it cost Trayvon Martin his life.

Character Assassination

Another aspect of the Trayvon Martin case that is highly disturbing is the attempt to assassinate his character. It is totally disgusting to see attempts to say that Trayvon Martin deserved what he got. If you think I am exaggerating, a simple Google search will turn up blogs calling Trayvon a punk and a thug and referring to his parents as ?bad parents?. (I will not link to them and promote them.)

?

?

I have never met a teenager who is perfect. Most teenagers make mistakes. That is why they need parents to guided them and try to show them the right way. Many teenagers test limits and show poor judgement. Some engage in risk taking behaviour that horrifies parents. Canadian broadcaster and scientist David Suzuki explore the reasons for this in Surviving :) The Teenage Brain.

?

?

As the adolescent brain?s pre-frontal cortex is developing, gradually learn to consider the consequences of their actions and display sound judgement. For this reason, I did not give my son permission to participate in social media as a teenager. When I discovered he had opened an account at school, I urged him to exercise great care about what he posted. I advised him to be careful and pointed out that anything he posted could come back to haunt him.

To imply or in some cases state that Trayvon Martin?s youthful lapses in judgement and mistakes mean that Zimmerman was justified in killing an unarmed teenager is despicable. People posing this argument should be ashamed of themselves. It is telling that they don?t bring up George Zimmerman?s history of violence. In fact, until there was public outcry, the police didn?t even investigate George Zimmerman?s criminal record but they did try to see if they could dig one up for Trayvon, a juvenile. They couldn?t.

Similar dynamics are at play in the corporate world. If someone is passed over for promotion and they suspect it is due to their race and ethnicity, rarely is there an attempt to conduct an impartial investigation to uncover the truth objectively. Instead, the character assassination begins. Every effort is made to justify the decision by tarnishing someone?s reputation even if the individual has had glowing performance reviews and no concerns about his or her performance have ever been documented.

Groupthink

Finally, based on the interview with Juror B-37, it appears that groupthink may have been at play in the jury that was initially split. Here is the Juror B-37 ?interview transcript. She even spoke of other jurors putting pressure on a juror who really wanted to leave. 5 jurors voted and the 6th one finally caved into group pressure resulting in a verdict of ?not guilty? instead of a hung jury. When Groupthink kicks in, the wrong decisions are made on juries and in the corporate world?.sometimes with serious consequences.

The Aftermath

In summary, racial profiling can mean that the best candidate is discounted and the wrong candidate joins the team. Character assassination is used to cover up and justify decisions instead of evaluating them objectively and groupthink ensures that many teams continue to make poor decisions. Together, the same dynamics that played out in the Trayvon Martin case are alive and well in the corporate world and they undermine corporate effectiveness daily.

Introducing myProject Nollywood; Re-inventing Nollywood and ...

...

?

Last weekend, I had the chance to put on the Spotlight, Victor Akeze, Founder of http://www.myprojectnollyowood.com we both agreed on one thing, it?s time to showcase (Africa especially Nigerian entertainment industry)and bring it to a level where they can compete with the other two bigger industries like Hollywood and Bollywood.

Together with his Co-Founder Matthias Okala, they have built a unique platform to fund and collaborate on everything entertainment for Africans all over the world.

myProject Nollywood is truly a unique undertaking from someone whose taste and passion for movies, and most especially, a good story is undoubtedly the sole reason he started this project and to allow people like me and you, fund projects we want to see hit the big and small screens. ?Don?t be fooled, this project isn?t just about movies, it about entertainment in general which includes supporting music, theatre art, stand-up comedy and you name it.

In a nutshell, myProject Nollywood is an idea and talent incubator that provides support to passionate, up and coming entertainers. The platform invites cinematic, stage production and other scripted entertainment ideas. Through crowd funding and crowd sourcing myProject Nollywood takes your idea from inception to production.

Unlike other crowdfunding or crowdsourcing websites, myProject Nollywood has decided to cut themselves a particular niche by concentrating on everything entertainment.

On myProject Nollywood, aspiring or?credited?actors, actresses, musicians, directors, producers, sound editors, make-up artists etc or anyone who?s got a beautiful location to share for video shoots, concerts, stand-up entertainment can use my platform as their ideal Launchpad to kick start their dream project and share it will the world for funding or collaboration.

Their business model has been kept very simple; post your project ? written or/and video for funding, reward those who have shown support. Or source the right talent needed for project collaboration?all within their platform?and together as a team, pitch your project for funding as well as connect to production partners?Production Houses, Producers, Directors and Distributors.

The key take away from what this new company is trying to do is not necessarily re-inventing the wheel, but instead, felt that time has come for a change. They are using their platform with the power of the crowd to re-invent an industry that is lacking quality and enough bite to say, yes, we are the third biggest industry in the world.

myProject Nollywood will be working closely with top performing arts colleges, universities, international film organisations to achieve its goal.

5 things to know about Tour de France

SAINT-MALO, France (AP) ? Five things to know as the Tour de France enters its 11th stage on Wednesday:

___

1. BRITTANY BEAUTY ? If any region can be considered the heart of French cycling, it's Brittany. Home to five-time Tour winner Bernard Hinault and three-time champion Louison Bobet, France's verdant and rocky western shoulder is also known for its oysters, crepes, maritime and Celtic past, and regional pride: roadway signs are in both French and the local Breton language, as part of efforts to resuscitate its historic identity. On Tuesday, Brittany's black-and-white flags ? with a striped motif that's somewhat reminiscent of the American flag ? flew in large numbers on roadsides as Tour riders cut a 197-kilometer (122.4-mile) south-to-north, swathe through Brittany for Stage 10, won by Germany's Marcel Kittel at the walled city of Saint-Malo.

___

2. BUS CRUSH ? The crush of autograph-seeking fans, harried team staffers in cars, busy journalists and weary, adrenaline-charged riders can make for chaos after a Tour stage. One such episode broke out Tuesday at the Omega Pharma Quickstep bus ? where journalists sought comment from Mark Cavendish after he bumped into Argos Shimano's Tom Veelers, causing the Dutch rider to crash, in the final sprint. One TV journalist pleaded with a team vehicle driver who had rolled on his foot to back up. The Briton lost his temper after hearing a question he didn't like by grabbing an Associated Press reporter's recorder, and briefly placing it in the bus ? before it was returned. Anger flares sometimes between riders themselves: After a stage in the 2010 Tour, Spain's Carlos Barredo brawled with Rui Costa after the finish ? even trying to whack the Portuguese rider with a bike wheel.

___

3. BRAND NEW BIKE BITS ? When you ride as fast as Cavendish does, it's important to be able to slow down, too. He's been experimenting with cutting-edge hydraulic brakes at this Tour ? and his team says they have already proved themselves. He's been using the hydraulic brakes, instead of the old-fashioned cable-activated ones, on and off since the first stage. The brakes "saved him from crashing," said Rolf Aldag, a director on Cavendish's Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, in the pileup which marred the end of that stage. Speaking before Tuesday's stage, Aldag said Cavendish was able to avoid the Stage 1 chaos, when "everybody else around him crashes." He said the brakes are especially effective in wet conditions, and the team intends to equip its other riders with the brakes, too. But Cavendish hasn't used the brakes every day at the Tour ? and wasn't using them Tuesday.

___

4. HISTORY GALORE ? Tour riders will get a varied dose of history ? if they have time for it ? for the Stage 11 time trial on Wednesday. The ride starts in Avranches, whose website dates the town's origins back to Celts in the 9th century B.C. More recently, the town was liberated by forces of U.S. Gen. George S. Patton in World War II. Then, it's a 33-kilometer (20.5-mile) ride over to the breathtaking island citadel of Mont-Saint-Michel, listed as a World Heritage site by the United Nations' cultural agency, which calls it a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey erected between the 11th and 16th centuries.

___

5. TICK, TOCK ? Chris Froome will be focusing on the present, not the past, for Wednesday's race-against-the-clock: The Briton has worn the Tour leader's yellow jersey since capturing it Saturday in the first of two stages in the Pyrenees mountains. The 182 riders ? wearing space-age, aerodynamic helmets and atop special bikes ? will roll down the starter's ramp one by one in a race-against-the-clock, in reverse order of the standings. That means he will go last. Froome, who won bronze in the Olympic time trial last year, is seen as one of the favorites to win the stage ? along with Tony Martin of Germany, who won silver. Froome said: "I'm really looking forward to tomorrow ... Time trialing is one of those things that the more you do it, the better you become at it."

'Les Miserables' will move into familiar home

NEW YORK (AP) ? When "Les Miserables" arrives on Broadway next March, it will find a familiar home.

Mega-producer Cameron Mackintosh said Thursday that the current U.S. tour of "Les Miserables" ? which began in 2010 and is currently in Sacramento, Calif. ? will land at New York City's Imperial Theatre, the show's former home on Broadway for nearly 13 years.

The re-imagined story will begin previews March 1 with an official opening night set for March 23. Producers said the casting process for the new production has begun and will be completed later this summer.

The show marks the third time the show has made it to Broadway. The original landed in 1987, first at the Broadway Theatre before moving to the Imperial three years later. It played a total of 6,680 performances, ranking as the third-longest-running musical in Broadway history. A revival was mounted in 2006 at the Broadhurst Theatre but closed in 2008.

Victor Hugo's story about a decades-long manhunt, social inequality and redemption features the songs "I Dreamed a Dream," ''On My Own," ''Do You Hear the People Sing?" and "One Day More." Single ticket sales will begin in September.

It has been seen by nearly 65 million people worldwide in 42 countries and in 22 languages. There is a production based in London, and versions in Japan and South Korea. Shows in Canada, Australia and Spain are being worked on.

The Oscar-nominated big screen adaptation directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway was hailed for bringing the camera very close and for having the actors sing live.

The Imperial Theatre is currently home to "Nice Work If You Can Get It," which is due to close in mid-June, and is next to house the return of Billy Crystal's "700 Sundays" this winter.

Your travel insurance questions answered ? Meandering Musings

(Fotolia)

(Fotolia)

A recent survey from BMO Insurance found that just half of Canadians purchase travel insurance before leaving home. With 83% of us saying we?re planning to travel between May and September, that?s a lot of travellers who opt to travel without insurance.

As an avid traveller, I know choosing and understanding travel insurance can be confusing and frustrating. In the hopes of answering some of our Canoe.ca and Sun Media readers? most asked travel insurance questions, Travelzoo Canada?s travel insurance expert Michael Duchesne joined us for a live chat yesterday. These are his top tips for choosing an insurance provider and finding the very best deal on travel insurance.

Safe travels!

I?m travelling from PEI to Banff. Since I?m not leaving Canada, do I need to buy extra travel insurance? ? Reb82

Michael Duchesne: If you plan to travel outside of your home province, it is strongly recommended that you obtain additional private medical insurance and fully understand what your policy covers. This comes into play with things like trip cancellation or interruption insurance, which covers pre-paid non-refundable expenses should your travel plans be interrupted or cancelled.

I?m flying to Central America. What if I cancel my trip for reasons that are not medical or emergency, will insurance cover that?? ? MFJ

MD: Trip cancellation and travel health insurance are two distinct services. Trip cancellation covers pre-paid and non-refundable expenses if your plans are interrupted or cancelled. The five main types of insurance are generally sold in a combo of sorts. If you only want one, then ask for it and ask whether there are incentives to upgrade to all or just some. A comprehensive package covers trip cancellation and interruption, evacuation, medical and baggage, even flight insurance.

My 92 year old mother in law wants to go on a one week Alaska cruise. Trip leaves and returns to Vancouver, where we live. She will probably stay on the ship the whole time. She has had heart attack and a cancer issue which she takes medication for. She is OK now. I am finding that companies do not offer coverage over 90 years old. Your advice. ? John

MD: I would encourage you search for specialist travel insurers. Select insurance companies cover people if their medical conditions are under control and stable for certain period. As a caveat, be advised that a minor change in someone?s prescription or medication can mean that the medical condition is not considered ?stable?.

I cannot help but be cynical with insurance because of the number of incidents that I hear of where the insurance company refuses coverage for some technicality. How can I be sure that I am not just wasting my money on a premium where coverage will be denied, delayed or altered if I should ever have to use it? ? John Wood

MD: Because of our public healthcare system, many Canadians are unaware of the cost of hospitalization and treatment outside of their own borders. This is where planning comes into play. Ask a litany of questions when speaking with potential providers. The cost to purchase trip insurance is nominal when you consider what it could cost for a stay in hospital outside of Canada. Everyone should strive for peace of mind, because you have already taken time to plan a trip and spent money.

Michael, what are some questions travellers should be asking their travel insurance providers? ? Nicole

I would suggest asking what is the coverage cap? Does it cover trips longer than 30 days? Keep in mind that travel agents recommend that you get travel insurance because they get a percentage when you buy it, and because they could be held liable for losses if insurance options aren?t explained correctly. While they can give you information and provide direction, they are not insurance agents. It?s very important to direct specific questions to the insurance provider.

No, Mermaids Do Not Exist

Artist's rendering of mermaids. No credible evidence of the existence of mermaids has ever been found

Courtesy of Animal Planet

This week, Animal Planet aired two fake documentaries claiming to show scientific evidence of mermaids. I say ?fake documentaries? because that?s exactly what The Body Found and The New Evidence are. The ?scientists? interviewed in the show are actors, and there?s a brief disclaimer during the end credits. However, the Twitter conversation surrounding the show (#Mermaids) reveals that many viewers are unaware that the show isn?t real. (Sample Tweets: ?After watching the documentary #Mermaids the body found ? I believe there are mermaids!!!? and ?90% of the ocean is unexplored and you?re telling me #mermaids don?t exist??which has been retweeted more than 800 times.) It is, after all, airing on a network that claims to focus on educating viewers about the natural world. ?The Body Found? was rightfully described ?the rotting carcass of science television,? and I was shocked to see Animal Planet air a sequel.

As a marine biologist, I can tell you unequivocally that despite millennia of humans exploring the ocean, no credible evidence of the existence of mermaids has ever been found. Some claim that manatees are the source of the legend, but you?d have to be at sea an awfully long time to think that a manatee is a beautiful woman. Sure, new species are discovered all the time, but while a new species of bird or insect is fascinating, it doesn?t mean ?anything is possible,? and it is certainly not equivalent to finding a group of talking, thinking humanoids with fish tails covering half of their bodies. The confusion generated by ?The Body Found? got to be so significant that the United States government issued an official statement on the matter.

When I started angrily posting about this on Facebook and Twitter, many of my nonscientist friends asked me why it matters if people believe in mermaids. It matters because the ocean is extremely important. It provides jobs for tens of millions of people and food for billions. However, many marine resources are being overexploited and mismanaged, leaving us in serious danger of losing them forever. Policy solutions can help, but if you are so ignorant about what is really happening in the ocean that you believe that there are organisms that are half human and half fish, you're almost certainly unaware of the important problems, much less how to solve them. Even if you don?t believe in mythical creatures, you may be unaware of the severity of the crises facing our oceans. Now that we?ve established that mermaids aren?t real, here are 5 other important things about the ocean that everyone should know.

1. The oceans are not inexhaustible, we?re currently overharvesting many resources, and the consequences can be disastrous.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 32 percent of all global fisheries are ?overexploited, depleted, or recovering? and another 50 percent are fully exploited (as of 2010). Just 10 species of fish account for almost one-third of the total global catch, and nine of these species have been exploited so heavily that they?re at 10 percent or less of their historical maximum population. Overfishing is the single greatest threat to the ocean environment, but this isn?t just an environmental problem. Fish are a critically important natural resource, with more than 3 billion people getting at least 15 percent of their protein from the ocean. Although human population growth is still increasing, we won?t be able to increase the amount of fish we?re taking from the ocean.

2. Current fishing practices aren?t just problematic for the fish species we are trying to catch.

Most commercial fisheries don?t use a rod and reel, catching one fish at a time and throwing back what they don?t want (or aren?t allowed to sell). A single longline can be many miles long and have tens of thousands of baited hooks; purse seine nets can be miles across; and the largest trawl net on the market can fit several 747 airplanes in its opening. Bycatch, which occurs when fishermen catch animals swimming near their target catch, is unavoidable with fishing gear this large, but the problem can be unexpectedly severe. In some fisheries, 90 percent of the catch by weight is bycatch, which includes endangered sea turtles and sea birds as well as marine mammals. Some types of fishing, such as dynamite fishing and cyanide fishing, can heavily damage the environment. Dragging a heavy trawl net over the seafloor destroys countless fragile and ecologically important organisms, the equivalent of hunting for rabbits by bulldozing a forest and killing all the deer, birds, insects, and plants that live there. The FAO estimates that 7 million tons of bycatch are caught and discarded every year.

3. Just because a fish is from ?the ocean? doesn?t mean you should release it in the nearest body of salt water.

Invasive species are non-native organisms released into a new region. In the case of invasive fish, they are often introduced by aquarium hobbyists who release a fish when it gets too big for its tank. Often, there are no predators in the new habitat capable of eating these newly introduced animals. Lionfish, native to the Indo-Pacific, are believed to have been introduced to the Atlantic coast of the United States by aquarium hobbyists in the last few decades. Lionfish have no native predators in the Atlantic, and non-native predators are often deterred by their venomous spines. A single female lionfish can release millions of eggs in a year, so it?s no surprise that lionfish are now found throughout the Caribbean and as far north as New York, and they are outcompeting or eating native, economically important fishes such as snapper and grouper.

4. Sharks aren?t a threat to you, they?re important, and they?re in trouble

The average American has only a 1 in 3,800,000 chance of being killed by a shark. You?re more likely to be killed by a lawnmower or a vending machine, and more likely to be bitten by a stranger on the subway. Like all predators, sharks help keep the ocean in balance by eating the sick, the weak, and the dying.? However, sharks are suffering from overfishing more than most marine species, with 1 in 6 species of shark, skate, or ray (and 1 in 3 species of open ocean shark) considered ?Threatened with Extinction? by the IUCN Red List.

5. Although mermaids don?t exist, the ocean is still full of wonder, and it needs your help!

What you do affects the ocean even if you live far away, and there?s a lot that you can do to help. Purchase sustainable seafood. Use reusable grocery bags instead of single-use plastic bags, which can choke sea turtles or sea birds. Support politicians who support ocean conservation, or encourage your current elected officials to support the ocean. Most importantly, ask your friends and family to do the same.

If I?ve ruined your sense of wonder about the oceans, don?t fret. The absence of mermaids certainly doesn?t mean that the oceans are boring.? As deep sea ecologist Andrew David Thaler said, "Look, the ocean is a vast, unexplored frontier. The deep sea is Earth?s last great wilderness. When we do venture into the abyss, we find creatures more diverse and incredible that our relatively limited imaginations can conceive. Don?t insult that wonder with something as utterly mundane as ?human with fish tail.? ?

Several of my marine scientist colleagues and I subjected ourselves to three hours of fake mermaid documentaries, live-tweeting and correcting inaccuracies as we watched. Click here to read a Storify of this discussion.

NJ BPU approves PSE&G's $446 million solar plan

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The board that regulates New Jersey's public utilities on Wednesday approved a $446 million solar energy plan proposed by the state's largest utility, adding several recommendations aimed at increasing oversight of the nearly half-billion-dollar programs.

The Board of Public Utilities unanimously approved Public Service Electric and Gas's nearly $200 million extension of its solar loan program that targets mainly residential and business customers. A $247 million extension of a program that will develop solar installations primarily on unused landfills and former industrial sites passed by a 3-1 margin.

Board commissioner Jeanne Fox, who cast the vote against the extension of the Solar 4 All program, raised concerns that ratepayers will be required to fund the program and that the new solar development could flood the market for solar energy credits that utilities buy from solar producers. Prices for the credits have fallen in recent years because more solar energy was being produced than the utilities needed.

Terry Moran, PSE&G's director of solar market strategy and development, said the company doesn't anticipate the Solar 4 All program having a negative impact on the solar credits market since it is reduced by more than two-thirds ? from 136 megawatts in an original proposal to 45 megawatts ? and will be rolled out over three years. A megawatt is capable of powering about 1,000 homes.

"We feel the reduced program will help alleviate that risk," Moran said.

The BPU on Wednesday modified PSE&G's proposal to require the company to furnish the board with monthly financial and progress reports; submit within 30 days its criteria for selecting projects and developers and give the board and ratepayer advocate 10 days to review contracts before they are executed. PSE&G's proposal had provided for yearly reporting.

The Office of Rate Counsel had sought more oversight as part of its objections to PSE&G's filing, and had criticized the plan for giving the company an unfair market advantage since it will recover its costs by increases to ratepayers.

"We're glad to see that they at least were considering our objections and that they made some modifications based on that," director Stefanie Brand said.

Board commissioners who approved both programs spoke of the need for New Jersey to have a robust solar energy market but cautioned that it must proceed carefully.

"It is extremely important to have increased transparency," Joseph Fiordaliso said. "As an agency we have to monitor that very closely."

While landfills and brownfields are seen as prime locations for solar installations, so far they account for a tiny handful of the more than 20,000 solar projects already installed in New Jersey. Five landfill solar projects are in operation and about two dozen more are either in development or being considered, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

"We're gratified that the board has approved both of our filings," Moran said. "As we've said during the course of these proceedings, we felt both of these filings are consistent with and satisfy the state's energy master plan goals, so we're really looking forward to the process of implementing both of them."

Last anti-Chavez TV station to be sold

(AP) ? The last remaining television station critical of Venezuela's government is being sold to an insurance company owner who is apparently friendly with the ruling socialists, its owners announced Monday, following an unrelenting official campaign to financially strangle the broadcaster through regulatory pressure.

The announcement, which civil liberties advocates called a crushing blow to press freedom, comes a month ahead of crucial elections to replace Hugo Chavez, with the opposition candidate accusing the late president's political heirs of multiple violations of the constitution, and repeated lying, to seek unfair advantage.

The editorial line of Globovision is expected to change under new management, employees told The Associated Press.

Many journalists on the staff of 450 sobbed when informed of the sale, certain some would lose their jobs for openly confronting the government.

"We are economically unviable because our income doesn't cover our expenses. We can't even raise salaries enough to compensate for inflation," owner Guillermo Zuloaga wrote in a letter to employees.

Politically, the station is unviable because "we are in a completely polarized country on the opposite end of an all-powerful government that wants to see us fail," he added. Third, Globovision's license expires two years from now under a recent government rule change.

The sale will wait until April 14 elections, which Chavez's hand-picked successor, Nicolas Maduro, is highly favored to win. But there is fear that journalists at the channel could exercise self-censorship, a common phenomenon under the Chavistas.

The feared disappearance of Globovision's independent voice would strengthen the hand of a government that began showing increasing intolerance for dissent even before Chavez died after a nearly two-year bout with cancer.

Zuloaga informed staff of the planned sale at a meeting Monday, naming the buyer as Juan Domingo Cordero, president of the insurance company La Vitalicia.

One employee told the AP that Cordero is friendly with government officials such as National Assembly speaker Diosdado Cabello. He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of losing his job.

Cordero did not respond to AP attempts for comment, including a visit to his Caracas office, where his assistant said he was in a meeting.

Chavez supporters were heartened by the news.

"We don't deserve a channel like Globovision. They lie, deceive, can never say anything good about the revolution," said Luis Pina, an unemployed 29-year-old who had attended a rally Monday to celebrate Maduro's formal registration for the election.

Under constant state pressure for alleged violations of media laws passed under Chavez, Globovision has been forced to pay millions of dollars in fines while its viewership on the public spectrum was reduced to just two cities: Caracas and Valencia.

In the meeting with employees, Zuloaga said that "politically, economically and legally" Globovision was no longer a viable business, in part because it had no access to dollars at preferential rates to buy equipment, as Cordero's business does, the employee said.

The employee said the buyers had presented themselves as politically neutral.

"A lot of journalists were crying and surely more than one of them will have to go," he said.

The state telecommunications agency has repeatedly sanctioned Globovision and threatened to shut it down, with eight administrative cases currently pending against it that could have led to additional fines and even closure orders.

In June, it was fined $2.2 million for running supposedly incendiary reports on a 2011 prison riot.

In the most recent case, it was accused of sowing panic for running spots challenging the constitutionality of the government's decision to postpone the swearing in of Chavez, which was supposed to have occurred Jan. 10, due to the cancer that ultimately killed him.

Globovision also faces possible sanctions for alleged tax evasion. And it was accused by the Chavez government of backing a 2002 attempt to overthrow him.

The Americas director of Human Rights Watch, Jose Miguel Vivanco, said the sale caps a disturbing trend.

"After years of going after its critics, the government of Venezuela has created an environment in which journalists weigh the consequences of what they say for fear of suffering reprisals in the form of abusive or arbitrary state action," he said via email.

"If the channel changes its editorial line after this sale, Venezuelans will have even more limited information in the coming weeks before the elections," Vivanco added.

In print, two major national newspapers, El Nacional and El Universal, remain highly critical of the government, but in the all-important television sector Globovision was that last major critical voice. Four private channels exist in Venezuela, all ostensibly neutral, while the government has four state-run channels and the regional news network Telesur.

"This is the only broadcast media in the country that informs us accurately," said Noral Villereal, a 53-year-old insurance broker, about Globovision. "I think we're going to be left without any kind of trustworthy news."

Opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, who lost to Chavez in October elections, is already at a severe disadvantage in the April 14 vote. The government has the national treasury of an oil-rich nation at its disposal and takes over the public airwaves at will.

The Zuloaga family owns 80 percent of Globovision. The other 20 percent belonged to a banker but was expropriated years ago by Chavez. Zuloaga had been living outside of Venezuela since 2010 after a court ordered his arrest for allegedly illegally storing 24 automobiles at one of his homes.

It had become the lone opposition channel that year after RCTV was forced off cable and satellite networks. Its public airwaves license had been stripped three years earlier.

Carlos Lauria of the Committee to Protect Journalist said the slow strangling of Globovision followed a pattern nationally.

"Over the last 14 years the Venezuelan press has been gradually weakened and debilitated by an array of laws, restrictions, regulatory measures and judicial decisions that have really weakened the ability of the private media to report the news without official interference," he said.

Online betting site InTrade abruptly shuts down

The popular however inevitably controversial online betting site InTrade shut down abruptly on Sunday, citing an ongoing investigation and casting skepticism on Irish law in a vaguely worded statement. "With sincere regret we must inform you that due to circumstances recently discovered we must immediately cease trading activity on?www.intrade.com," the statement says, detailing that all trading on the site must cease, accounts must be settled and all transactions stopped immediately. There's nothing in the statement that boldly says InTrade is gone for good, and the company ends the statement on an almost optimistic note, asking customers to "bear with us as we do all we can to resume operations as promptly as possible." If they can't figure it out, that means no more betting on election results or Oscar winners or anything fun. Back to boring old cards and horses.

RELATED: When Monks Get Punked

Now, the InTrade shutdown was abrupt but not altogether surprising. The Dublin-based company's been in United States regulators' sights for ages, and last November, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued InTrade for running an informal exchange and accused it of breaking an online gambling settlement. This also meant that InTrade would have to cease its U.S. operations prompted pundits to start wondering when the whole house would come crashing down. But then, just over a week ago, those same pundits started wondering if the new wave of states legalizing online gambling could bring InTrade back to the fun, legal center of things. While nothing is final or really even clear at this point, things aren't looking great for InTrade right now. They are however looking pretty good for?Archbishop Angelo Scola, an Italian cardinal favored to succeed Benedict XVI. At least, according to InTrade's numbers they are.

  • Cease exchange trading on the website immediately.

Cleric resigns after allegations of 'inappropriate' conduct with priests

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric resigned on Monday following allegations he behaved in an inappropriate way with priests, and said he would not take part in the election of Pope Benedict's replacement.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien said he had tendered his resignation some months ago, ahead of his 75th birthday in March and because he was suffering from "indifferent health".

The Vatican said the pope, who steps down on Thursday, had accepted O'Brien's resignation as archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh.

O'Brien, an outspoken opponent of gay marriage, has been reported to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behavior stretching back 30 years, according to Britain's Observer newspaper.

The cardinal, who last week advocated allowing Catholic priests to marry as many found it difficult to cope with celibacy, rejected the allegations and was seeking legal advice, his spokesman said.1

"Looking back over my years of ministry: For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended," O'Brien said in a statement, which made no reference to the recent allegations.

He said he would not attend the election next month of a new pope, saying: "I do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me - but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor."

The Observer, which gave little detail on the claims, said three priests and a former priest, from a Scottish diocese, had complained over incidents dating back to 1980.

One said the cardinal formed an "inappropriate relationship" with him while another complained of unwanted behavior by O'Brien after a late-night drinking session.

Last year, O'Brien's comments labeling gay marriage a "grotesque subversion" landed him with a "Bigot of the Year" award from British gay rights group Stonewall.
